Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove unwanted hair. During laser hair removal, a laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the hair follicles that produce hairs. Once the follicles are destroyed, hair can’t grow back. You can have many areas on your body treated, including under your arms, your back, shoulders, neck, face, bikini area, legs, and other areas.

Laser hair removal usually requires a series of four to six treatments. The interval between treatments will vary depending on the location. On areas where hair grows quickly, such as the upper lip, the treatment might be repeated in four to eight weeks. On areas of slow hair growth, such as the back, the treatment might be every 10 to 14 weeks.

Preparation

Laser hair removal is more than just ''zapping'' unwanted hair. It is a medical procedure that requires training to perform and carries potential risks. Before getting laser hair removal, you should thoroughly check the credentials of the doctor or technician performing the procedure.

If you are planning on undergoing laser hair removal, you should limit plucking, waxing, and electrolysis for six weeks before treatment. That's because the laser targets the hairs' roots, which are temporarily removed by waxing or plucking.

You should also avoid sun exposure for six weeks before and after treatment. Sun exposure makes laser hair removal less effective and makes complications after treatment more likely.

During the procedure

Before the treatment, the area to be treated will be cleansed. The laser equipment will be adjusted according to the color, thickness, and location of your hair being treated as well as your skin color. you and the technician will need to wear appropriate eye protection. It will also be necessary to protect the outer layers of your skin with a cold gel or special cooling device, (This will help the laser light penetrate the skin) a hand-held laser instrument will press to your skin. a cooling device on the tip of the instrument will protect your skin and lessen the risk of side effects. When the technician activates the laser, the laser beam will pass through your skin to the hair follicles. The intense heat from the laser beam damages the hair follicles, which inhibits hair growth. You might feel a minor discomfort, such as a warm pinprick, and you'll likely feel a sensation of cold from the cooling device or gel.

Treating a small area, such as the upper lip, might take only a few minutes. Treating a larger area, such as the back, might take more than an hour.

Note : Usually topical numbing medicine is applied 20- 30 minutes before the laser procedure, to help with the sting of the laser pulses. Its optional.

After the procedure

Laser hair removal generally does not require any real downtime.  but Some might experience redness and swelling for the first few hours after. the treated area of your skin will look and feel like it's sunburned. Cool compresses and moisturizers may help. If your face was treated, you can wear makeup the next day unless your skin is blistering. To avoid possible side effects, all patients need to protect their skin from the sun.

After laser hair removal, you should:

  • Avoid direct sunlight from hitting your treated skin.

  • Not use a tanning bed, sun lamp, or any other indoor tanning equipment.

  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily.

  • Follow  after-care instructions.

Results

You will likely see the results immediately after treatment. The results vary from patient to patient. The color and thickness of your hair, area treated, type of laser used, and color of your skin all affect the results. You can expect up to 25% reduction in hair after the first treatment.

To remove the hair, most patients need 2 to 6 laser treatments. After finishing the treatments, most patients do not see any hair on the treated skin for several months or even years. When the hair regrows, there tends to be less of it. The hairs also tend to be finer and lighter in color.

Cost

People always asked, Is it expensive? Well, If you think about how much money you spend on creams, razors, waxing services and other hair removal methods over your lifetime, you will probably still find laser hair removal to be cheaper. The key is to understand the amount of time that it can save you. This is where the cost effectiveness really comes into play.
